Fetească Regală

Fetească Regală

There are two categories of grapes cultivated in Romania: international varieties, important after the phylloxera outbreak of the 19th century and the old traditional Romanian varieties. The most frequent grape variety in Romania is Feteasca Regala, with grape vines covering 12 661 hectares in 2017, representing 13.5% of the noble varieties of Romanian grapes.

The most well-known and traditional local varieties are Feteasca Neagra, Feteasca Alba and Feteasca Regala, grown in all viticulture regions. These grapes produce dry, semi-dry or sweet wines, with a 12-14% alcohol content, with a red color and ruby tinges and a fragrance of black currants, richer and finer as they age. This variety produces high quality wines, perfect for ageing.

In terms of grape vine cultures, Feteasca Regala is resistant to frost and mildew, probably all good reasons for its popularity, but it is also sensitive to drought. It is deemed as a semi-aromatic grape variety, the wines are dry, fresh, have high acidity and an exquisite fragrance.
