One of the smaller Muscat grape varieties, the Muscat Ottonel vine, may be found throughout the Russian territory, as well as in the colder viticulture areas in Western Europe. Muscat Ottonel is a more recent completion of the old Muscat family and it was cultivated from a seedling in France and deemed as a transition between Chasselas and an undefined Muscat variety.
The important features of the Muscat vine are its small, pentagonal leaves, with five lobes and small to medium cylindrical grapes, round to oval fruit, with a yellow-green color. The grape skin has a fine taste of nutmeg.
The ripening period is the middle of the viticulture season. The Muscat variety may be difficult to manage by grape growers, being highly sensitive as it prefers warm areas, protected by wind and soil with good water and nutrient retention. The blossoming phase is highly sensitive, and the harvest performance may often be irregular and low. Muscat Ottonel only tolerates a low lime content in the soil, and it is easily susceptible to chlorosis when the weather is cold and humid.
Muscat Ottonel grapes give birth to full and gentle wines, with a delicate fragrance, while from well ripened grapes one may produce dry, very supple wines, which are ideal with sweet foods.
