Pinot Noir is, without a shadow of a doubt, the most romantic red wine in the world. No other grape generates so many emotions and so much devotion among its enthusiasts.
Pinot Noir grows relatively early (Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are often harvested at the same time), so it is not suitable for very warm regions where there would be no time to develop interesting fragrances before the acidity levels drop.
On the other hand, in many of the colder regions where it flourishes, the grape is susceptible to autumn rains, which may rot the fruit, leading to pale wines.
One of the reasons for which the Pinot Noir grapes bestirs such devotion is that the care, growth and harvesting are more difficult, which leads to the Pinot Noir bottles becoming a rare discovery.
The fragrances of young Pinot Noir wines include ripe red berries, sweet black cherries, mushrooms; with time, they create a bouquet which is often reminiscent of licorice or freshly fallen wet leaves.
