Tămâioasa Românească

Tămâioasa Românească

Tamaioasa Romaneasca is a grape variety with a tradition of over 2000 years in Romania. Although its origin is uncertain, it is known that the grapes come from the south of Greece, from the Muscat family, and is one of the oldest varieties in the world. In ancient times, the Muscat wines were the most cherished from all countries located in the Mediterranean basin. Moreover, these wines – which were often transported in amphora – and the vine saplings were used as currency in trade practices.

In Romania, the grape variety was introduced by Greek colonists and by their trade with the Danube and Black Sea city ports, which recorded an exponential development during the reign of Boerebiste, the first Dacian king (82-44 BC). Its ancient history on Romanian soil, along with the survival following the phylloxera outbreak (approximatively 1860), grants it the right to be considered an indigenous variety.

Tamaioasa is a relatively vigorous plant, with late harvest grapes, with a high amount of sugar accumulated. The plant is sensitive to frost, drought, excessive humidity and various vine diseases. Its productivity is low and it is spread throughout the Romanian vineyards.

Tamaioasa Romaneasca is cultivated on an area of approx. 1,000 hectares, especially in the vineyards of Dragasani, Mehedinti, Stefanești-Arges, Dealu Mare, Pietroasele, Murfatlar și Cotnari.

Due to the high accumulation of sugar, this grape variety produces aromatic dessert wines with a very good ageing potential, with unique flower, honeycomb, linden, acacia, white rose, basil and incense fragrances. During this tame, as a general surprise, Tamaioasa Romaneasca has also been produced as a dry win and it impresses through its delicate body, freshness and typical fragrances.
